Reflections on Process and Meaning
My subjects are derived from commonplace, everyday images; from media, art, pop culture, and advertising. I transpose these into painting in order to reveal their implied significance, meanings otherwise lost through ubiquity.
All images, even the most banal, are loaded with meaning. In my paintings these found symbols have been reduced to singular elements, in order that they may reveal more; through isolation, they beg for a new scrutiny.
Choices of subject, color and shape are informed by unconscious processes, and even the act of painting itself, for me becomes an exploration, or meditation. It is a means of examining the fragility of what we accept as truth. I never want to resolve a composition too soon, because it is only through time and adjustment that meaning reveals itself.
As a result of the exploratory process, many facets or phases of an image end up hidden: Figures may be added then covered over, leaving only traces or fragments. For me this takes on ritual implications: the process encompasses a cycle of creation and destruction, or of concealment and revelation.
